It always reminded me of those dreams about flying.
My family did finally reveal to me how they took this photo, but I'm not allowed to share. Family secret.
When I did learn about it, I remember being told that Tom could have gotten in a lot of trouble for this at the time. This shocked me. It didn't seem profane, or anti-American in any way. I always thought it was a very positive image. Of course it seems tame to me now because I could go down to Target and buy some American flag pattern underpants, but in the 60's you just didn't do things like this with the flag.
Even if it did ruffle some tail feathers, I believe this was a pretty well received photo. It was chosen by the American Society of Magazine Photographers to be on the cover of their 25th anniversary magazine. I believe this is sort of a big deal.
This photo keeps my imagination turning, and it inspires me to keep experimenting and to keep dreaming.
I hope that it inspires you in some way too.
