Ben shows off one of my grandfathers's great photos, but there were way more goodies in the back of that van.
While it was a relief to get the photos out of our basement and into a much safer place, it was also really sad. It was so much fun to be able to see years of great photographic work. Opening a box was a great thrill because I never knew what I would find. It might be a funny shot of a man selling ties in an alley way, or a photo essay on migrant workers. Whatever it was, I always found myself inspired. Inspired to take new photos, go new places, and experiment.
I'll miss having that concentrated inspiration at my fingertips, but I am glad to see it moving closer to a permanent home. One that will give it the ability to inspire, and teach other people.
